Alice in Numberland, Pancake pandemonium and singing mermaids all in a week!

We have had another great week and I can’t quite believe that I am sitting here writing at the end of another half term. Filled of pride, I have the opportunity to reflect on all of the fabulous learning that’s taken place and feel grateful to have such hard working, kind and caring children in my class.

In maths this week we have been focusing on recognising coins and notes. It has also been our whole school maths week with the theme of ‘Alice in Numberland’ which we have all really enjoyed! We have looked at doubling, halving, measuring and telling the time. After the holidays we will be focusing on multiplication and division using arrays.
In Literacy this week we all designed and created our own mermaid to put into our own story. Yesterday we planned our story clearly with a beginning, middle and end and we also considered the problem and resolution in our stories. Today the children wrote their own mermaid stories. I can’t wait to read these over the holidays. They look great! After the holidays we will start our non-fiction unit of work.

This week’s sound was ‘oo’. Please get the children to practice writing and reading words with this sound at home.

This week in Science we compared the similarities and differences between animals and humans, in particular an elephant! The children were great at this!

In history we sequenced the events of the Grace Darling Rescue Story and also completed end of topic assessments… I think it is fair to say that we have all learnt lots of new information.

Our Topic after half term is ‘Animal Kingdom’, if you see anything on your travels in the holidays that you think would be good to share please do bring it in when we return after the break.

My star this week is Melissa. I’ve been really proud of the effort she has made with her writing recently; I’ve seen masses of progress in a few short weeks and I can tell how hard she is trying. Well done Melissa and keep up this fabulous attitude! Tommy Bear was forgotten tonight and so he will look forward to joining Melissa for the week when we return.

Just a reminder for after the holidays, please make sure that children have PE kits in school for a Thursday. We still have some children who do not have PE kits in school.

Please continue to keep reading at home with your children whenever possible; accessing Reading Eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings, counting and letter formation on the sheets which were sent home in book bags. No spellings have gone home for over the holidays but if you can practice writing numbers to 20 as words that would be great!

I hope that you all have a happy, healthy and fun packed week. I am sure everyone will have lots to share about their week when we return.

Miss Chamberlain 🙂
