Another week in 1EC of learning and fun

I want to say a huge thank you to all of the children and parents for helping me to settle into my new school. The school has such a happy atmosphere and I am so excited about the year ahead.

This week we have all finished our reading, writing, maths and science assessments and I was so pleased with the effort the children put into these.

We have have begun to get use to the routines of Year 1. In Maths this week we have started our independent challenge lists. The children have really enjoyed doing these whilst I have worked with small teaching groups each day. The challenge lists focus on target areas for the children and consolidating what they already know. It has been so lovely to see the children beginning to take charge of their own learning.

In Literacy this week we have started our Traditional Tales unit of work. Yesterday we heard and watched the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff and then went on to order the main events of the story using pictures. The children all got very involved and acted the story out. Next week we will be learning about adjectives and will go on to use them in our sentences to write character descriptions of the troll (we have already begun to think about this…the whole class decided we would not want to meet a troll on a bridge!).

In Art we drew self portraits, using a mirror to see what we looked like. I was so impressed with the creative pieces that were produced. In Geography we have learnt about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and located them on a map using an atlas. Next week we will go on to learn about the capital cities of these countries.

Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school each day with them especially if they are attending after school sports clubs. Our PE day is on a Thursday afternoon. Maths homework is due in on a Tuesday and Learning Logs on a Wednesday. Spellings have been sent home tonight, these will be tested next Thursday so try to get some practice done! Reading books will be changed on a Thursday, please try to read at home with your child whenever possible. Reading Eggs and Mathletics passwords were sent home with your child this week so please try to use this when possible in order to further your child’s learning.

Tommy Bear has gone home with Maxymilian this week, our Star of the Week, Maxymilian has demonstrated some amazing number work this week and has been so helpful round the classroom.

Please check our class blog regularly for news. The children would really love to receive some comments to promote further learning discussion.

Before and after school can often be quite busy so if you do not get time to see me please do not hesitate to email me to on or arrange a time to meet with me to discuss any queries or issues.

I hope that you all have a relaxing weekend after a busy week (we had lots of very tired children this afternoon).
